The Carsac → Beynac trip — often referred to as the “Six Castles” trip — is one of the most complete canoe trips on the Dordogne. It follows a long, varied stretch of river with steady current, open views and classic valley scenery throughout.
You set off from Carsac-Aillac and paddle downstream at your own pace, following
the natural flow of the Dordogne.Along the way, the river passes several of the
valley’s most notable historic landmarks, visible directly from the water:
• Château de Montfort – appearing shortly after departure, overlooking a sweeping bend in the river.
• Château de Fayrac – set above the riverbank with clear views across the valley.
• Château de la Malartrie – located near La Roque-Gageac, right on the river’s edge.
• Château de Castelnaud – a prominent medieval fortress overlooking the valley.
• Château de Beynac – marking the end of your trip, perched high above the river.
• Château des Milandes – former home of Josephine Baker, set along a quieter section of the river.
This trip is best suited to paddlers comfortable with a longer distance. It offers a rewarding day out, combining steady paddling, varied landscapes and some of the

This is the end of the journey, you have arrived at the Butterfly canoe base, located to the left of the Beynac bridge. Before turning, take a moment to look to your right. You will see the majestic Château des Milandes, former home of Josephine Baker. Its elegant architecture stands proudly in the middle of lush greenery. Take one last look before docking and enjoy the beauty of the landscape.
